In his book, Your Marriage-Duel or Duet? Louis Evans tells of a couple that told him their marriage is on the rocks, but after all, “that is definitely our business.” Dr. Evans responded that their marriage is everybody´s business. Your marriage doesn´t affect only you.

Your marriage is a nation´s business. A nation is built and supported by strong marriages. “Everytime a home is destroyed, the whole nation suffers a severe thundershock.” The decline of the Roman Empire was initiated by “increase in divorce, the mad craze for pleasure, and the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home.”

Your marriage is your child´s business. Evans says a child is like a seismograph that registers every domestic earthquake and every marital shock. Now, around 40% of children are born out of wedlock. They won’t receive the benefit of the security found in married parents.

Your marriage is God´s business. God had the “difficult situation of endeavoring to explain His infinite character to our finite minds.” He chose to do it through the illustration of a marriage, His marriage covenant with Israel and Christ´s marriage to the church. When a home is destroyed He loses his “chief way of explaining Himself.”

He goes on to explain that in the past homes were sustained by outside pressures, much like the flying buttresses of Cathedrals in the past. These included economic and isolation pressures. The outside pressures that held homes together have now changed to social pressures. Whereas in the past, divorce was rare, it is now common.

Institutions like the church, families, and friends need to once again be encouragers of marriage and offer resources and help. Here is a list of just a few organziations that offer marital support:
